Our annual Active School Week took place from March 10th -14th. It was a hugely enjoyable week and the daily activities are outlined below:
Monday: Marion Riordan, golf professional at Ballykisteen Golf club, visited the school and took each class group for golf coaching. This included tuition on the correct grip and swing technique. The children had great fun testing these new skills when putting and chipping.
After school: Irish dancing lessons took place after school.
Tuesday: Walk on Weekday. A dozen parents, younger brothers and sisters, school staff and 61 pupils participated in a walk around the ‘diamond’ in Barna. The distance covered was 2 km. We were lucky that this walk coincided with the best afternoon weather wise and everyone had a great time taking in the beautiful scenery around Barna as they also got some exercise!
Wednesday: The pupils travelled to the Sean Treacy Memorial Swimming pool for swimming lessons. When back in school, the pupils participated in water safety workshops etc – safety on boats, around the home, on farms.
Thursday: Ross Corbett of the Camogie Association visited the school. Ross took the younger pupils for exercises which helped develop their fundamental movement skills. He later took the middle and senior classes for camogie and hurling.
After school: After school hurling training took place.
Friday: The pupils participated in lessons related to hydration & nutrition for physical activity. On Friday afternoon, Limerick hurler Paudie Ahern was on hand to present Active School Week participation certificates. He also brought along the Munster Senior Hurling Cup. The children were delighted to have an opportunity to hold the cup and there was a great question and answer session with Paudie – the children wanted to know what it was like to be involved in the Munster Final and how it felt at the final whistle.
Active School Week is a crucial element of the Active School Programme and Barna NS are proud to have the Active School Flag flying outside the school.
