P.E Strands
The P.E Curriculum
There are 6 strands in the P.E. curriculum:
- Athletics
- Dance
- Games
- Gymnastics
- Outdoor and Adventure
- Aquatics
The 6 strands are covered each year, with Aquatics being taught both in the swimming pool (lessons begin in 1st class) and in the classroom with the Land Paws programme.

Physical Education is allocated 1 hour per week of overall teaching time.
Athletics
This year we have decided to focus on Athletics specifically. The children will be learning more about relay races and non-competitive running, jumping for distance and height, throwing with different objects for distance and height while also a developing a better understanding of speed, speed, strength, co-ordination and control.

Dancing
Ms Fletcher’s class learning the “Shoe the Donkey” Dance.
Outdoor & Adventure
Games
Ms O’Dwyer’s class playing “King of the Ring” and “Spaceships and Saucers”
Aquatics
This is a certificate from Brendan O’Dwyer to say that Barna N.S. have completed their Swim 1 course.
Gymnastics
The children love practicing their rolls during gymnastics!
PE Equipment
Our Active School Committee came together to carry out an audit of the equipment last year. P.E. resources were organised and labelled so that all students and staff have easy access to hoops, balls, rackets, hurleys and so much more. Check out our store room!
